Sand with the grain up to 220 or 340 grit. Dont bother with any higher. Apply a commercial sanding sealer or pre-stain conditioner in ance with the instructions, or a thin coat of dewaxed shellac. Apply a large amount of stain over the entire surface of the part, as quickly as you are able.
Signs that wood stain may have gone bad include a strong, unpleasant odor, docHub thickening or clumping, or visible changes in color or texture. If you encounter these signs, its best to dispose of the stain properly and acquire a fresh can for your project.
In addition, you can try a second coat of stain to see if it deepens the color. Sometimes, the wet stain is exactly the color that youre looking for, but when the stain dries, it goes dull. Often, applying the clear protective finish will make the stain color-rich again.

Its essential to wait to apply a second coat too soon because this can result in the stain not adhering correctly to the wood, leading to an uneven finish. On the other hand, applying a second coat can also result in uneven color or peeling.
The stain may penetrate deeper into the porous areas, leading to darker patches. Uneven Sanding: If the wood surface is not sanded properly or if there are rough spots, the stain may be absorbed differently, resulting in blotches.
Different boards on glued-up panels take stain differently, some boards coming out lighter than others. Fix Apply more stain to the lighter boards either directly on the wood or by adding some of the stain color to the finish and shading them darker.
Have you ever finished staining a floor and wished a darker or lighter color of stain had been selected? Applying a second coat of stain to change the color is something you might try once, but the chances of success are not very good. A second coat of stain can cause other issues like peeling of the top coat(s).
