How big is a RAW image? The size of a RAW file depends on the size of the sensor, and whether your camera is an MFT, APS-C, full-frame or medium format camera. Most RAW files are sized between 20 - 40 MB per file.
Typically, a high-quality JPEG image might range from 3 to 7 MB, allowing for about 150 to 340 images per GB. RAW: Preferred for professional photography due to its high quality and flexibility in editing. RAW files can range from 20 to 30 MB each, so you could store 30 to 50 images per GB.
Camera raw files have no intrinsic color space, and raw processors can convert images to any color space supported by the apps. Third party raw processors, like Capture One, do not honor the majority of camera settings, including the color space setting.
Generally, a RAW file will be between two and six times larger than a JPEG file. RAW files are bigger because they contain a much greater amount of image data. A JPEG image is essentially all that data compressed down into a smaller file size thats easier to share.
Raw files for images made in soft or low light should always looked washed out. Why? If they look good on the back of the camera, your image is well under-exposed. It will be nosier than properly exposed files, the colors will be muddier, and the file sizes will be smaller with less color information.
RAW files are docHubly bigger than JPEG (and any other) image file formats. Thats because they contain all the raw image information captured by your digital cameras sensors, completely uncompressed.
A RAW file is lossless, meaning it captures uncompressed data from your camera sensor. Sometimes referred to as a digital negative, you can think of a RAW file as the raw ingredients of a photo that will need to be processed in order to bring out the pictures full potential.
File size information for RAW files taken with a full-frame camera: Uncompressed 100 MB. Lossless compression 62 MB. Compressed 52 MB.
