The New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars (abbreviated NGC) is an astronomical catalogue of deep-sky objects compiled by John Louis Emil Dreyer in 1888. The NGC contains 7,840 objects, including galaxies, star clusters and emission nebulae.
The cluster of blue stars, called NGC 602, formed when a large part of the gas cloud collapsed under gravity and became very dense. The fierce radiation now being produced by these hot, young stars is sculpting the inner rim of the gaseous nebula.
NGC 602 is a young, bright open cluster of stars located in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a satellite galaxy to the Milky Way. It is embedded in a nebula known as N90. A Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of NGC 602 (north is left).
The Andromeda galaxy (also known as Messier 31, M31 or NGC 224), a spiral, is the largest member of the Local Group of galaxies and along with the Milky Way, both dominate the Local Group. It is the nearest large spiral to the Milky Way.
NGC 6041 is the brightest galaxy (BCG) in the Hercules Cluster. The galaxy was discovered by astronomer douard Stephan on June 27, 1870. Sloan Digital Sky Survey image of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 6041.
Near the outskirts of the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy some 200 thousand light-years distant, lies the young star cluster NGC 602.
