In reproducing or quoting from a document in which certain words are missing or illegible, an author may use ellipsis points, a bracketed comment or guess (sometimes followed by a question mark), or both.
When you cannot understand the audio at all, instead of guessing, you can mention [inaudible] or [unintelligible] in the transcriptions to indicate that part of the recording wasnt clear to transcribe. You could use symbols like - or . or write [several inaudible words] to indicate unclear sounds.
Illegible or unclear text Illegible text is anything you cant read because a page is damaged, the text is crossed out, or you cant tell what the author has written. If there is a word or a string of words you cannot read, transcribe as a pair of square brackets around a question mark [?].
Mark unintelligible speech as ###. This can stand for a whole line or it can be inserted for a word of phrase. Remember, dont put punctuation after ### in your transcript (see Section 6.2).
If a false start, regardless of whether it is subsequently corrected or completed, contributes valuable meaning to the text, it should not be omitted from the transcript. Instead, punctuate the break in the sentence with an em-dash. Also, intentional repetition of phrases for emphasis should be preserved.
If the whole word or phrase is indecipherable, flag its place in the transcribed sentence with [illegible] (e.g. I [illegible] the leaves yesterday). Combining words.
There is no need to use caret symbols or brackets to indicate an inserted word. See example page. Deleted words or words struck out in the original text---Please write strikethrough or crossed-out, when appropriate, in double brackets before and after the word or phrase that has been struck out or deleted.
Illegible Text Use [square brackets] and a [question mark?] to indicate text that is illegible or that you are unsure about.
