In the final section of the novel, just before George kills Lennie, Steinbeck describes how the light climbed out of the valley. (Section 6). Light could represent hope and happiness, so the light disappearing at this point could be Steinbecks way of telling us that hope is now lost.
Because George is forced to kill his friend himself, Lennies death is not only the death of a single vulnerable person, but also the destruction of a rare and idealized friendship.
The days-old puppy symbolizes the inescapability of doom and sufferingafter narrowly surviving being drowned by Slim, it dies at Lennies hands after he accidentally smacks it too hard when it tries to playfully bite him, perhaps as it was even suckling Lennies fingers in search of milk.
In John Steinbecks novel Of Mice and Men, the death of Candys dog symbolises the loneliness of the ranch workers, and demonstrates that there is no place for affection or sentimentality in their lives. Early on in the novel, George states that men who work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world.
He also says the puppy isnt as small as a mouse and it should have been able to endure his rough play. Lennies arguments are obviously invalid, this displays how he is not willing to take responsibility for his actions. He blames the dog for the fact that it cannot handle his rough play when he is at fault.
Lennies puppy is one of several symbols that represent the victory of the strong over the weak. Lennie kills the puppy accidentally, as he has killed many mice before, by virtue of his failure to recognize his own strength.

One of the characters that I feel comes across as weak in the novel is Crooks. The reason being is because of how he is treated by the other characters in this novel. For example, most of the characters except for Slim refer to Crooks as a .
