There are several types of syncope. The most common type in children is called vasovagal syncope, which is a benign type of fainting that occurs in response to a trigger, such as pain or emotional stress. Orthostatic hypotension is another type of benign syncope that can occur in children.
When coming round after a faint, the person often feels awful, sickly and may vomit, or even have diarrhoea. Often there is prolonged fatigue after a faint.
Vasovagal syncope causes Vasovagal syncope happens when you have a sudden drop in blood pressure, which causes a drop in blood flow to your brain. It often occurs after standing for a while or under emotional distress.
Does vasovagal syncope ever go away? Its very common for people to only have vasovagal syncope once in their lifetime. However, some people with specific triggers may have vasovagal syncope for the rest of their lives.
Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope. The vasovagal syncope trigger causes your heart rate and blood pressure to drop suddenly.
A common confounder of vasovagal syncope and presyncope is postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a multisystem disorder of the autonomic nervous system. The hallmark manifestation of POTS is symptomatic orthostatic tachycardia, with lightheadedness and presyncope.
How is vasovagal syncope treated? Avoiding triggers, such as standing for a long time or the sight of blood. Moderate exercise training. Discontinuing medicines that lower blood pressure, like diuretics. Eating a higher salt diet, to help keep up blood volume. Drinking plenty of fluids, to maintain blood volume.
Syncope means fainting or passing out. When fainting is caused by certain triggers, like the sight of blood or a needle, or an intense emotion like fear or fright, its called vasovagal syncope. Its the most common cause of fainting. Vasovagal syncope is sometimes referred to as a neurocardiogenic or reflex syncope.
