In general, grossly or even moderately hemolyzed blood specimens may not be acceptable for testing. Hemolysis occurs when the red cells rupture and hemoglobin and other intracellular components spill into the serum. Hemolyzed serum or plasma is pink or red, rather than the normal clear straw or pale yellow color.
Syncope is a loss of consciousness due to a decrease in the flow of blood to the brain.
The accuracy of certain test results may be affected by what you eat, medicines you take, and even how your feel when you provide your test sample.
Hemolysis refers to lysis of red blood cells (erythrocytes). 2, 3 Plasma or serum is normally clear (ie, not turbid or cloudy) and straw colored. In specimens obtained by venipuncture, hemolysis is visually evident by pinkish or reddish color of plasma or serum that has been separated from erythrocytes.
Haemolysis is the release of intracellular components from erythrocytes, thrombocytes and leukocytes into the extracellular fluid, i.e. the plasma or serum1. Haemolysis is visible as a red colouration of the plasma or serum after centrifugation of the sample.
Hemolysis visually appears as pinkish or reddish plasma/serum. Lipemic plasma or serum appears turbid and opaque. The most common causes of hemolysis are associated with phlebotomy and specimen transport/processing (in vitro factors).
The term hemolysis designates the pathological process of breakdown of red blood cells in blood, which is typically accompanied by varying degrees of red tinge in serum or plasma once the whole blood specimen has been centrifuged.
Which specimen is more likely to be hemolyzed, an evacuated tube drawn specimen or a syring drawn specimen? why? A syringe drawn specimen because of the higher risk for trauma during the transfer of the specimen from syringe to tube and the delay before the blood is mixed with the anti-coagulant.
