Question: Is it normal to hear soft music coming directly from the surface of a record, even if the record is not playing through speakers? Answer: Yes, this is normal. It is commonly referred to as surface noise or needle chatter, though there is no universally accepted term for the phenomenon.
Record players produce lower volume output compared to digital devices due to their low electrical signal and analogue mastering techniques. Common reasons for a quiet record player include a lack of a phono preamp, cartridge problems, needle problems, bad RCA cables, and speaker issues.
If the tonearm is improperly balanced or the tracking force is set too low, it could result in a quieter sound. Youll also find that the record sound terrible. Check the balance of your tonearm and adjust it if necessary. Also, make sure the tracking force is set to the correct value for your cartridge.
Musical ear syndrome causes When your brain doesnt hear enough sounds, it overcompensates for the lack of stimulation and starts to generate sounds by itself. Its understood that the condition normally occurs in older adults with hearing loss, but it can happen to those who lose their hearing at any age.
Make sure your record player is level This may sound deeply obvious, but a lot of subpar vinyl sound is simply caused by an uneven set-up. When a turntable is tilted, the needle drags on the inner walls of the record grooves and causes distortion.
If the tip of the stylus has cracked, or has worn so badly that it wont sit in the groove, it could be riding along the path of two adjacent grooves, which would cause the echo youre hearing.
Confirm your turntable power adapter is connected to both the back of the turntable and a known working power outlet. If your speakers or amplifier dont have a preamp, make sure the preamp switch is in the LINE position (if applicable).
