A QR code can hold numerical digits, alphabets, Kanji characters, and byte/binary data. It can encode a *maximum of 7089 numeric characters, 4296 alphanumeric characters, 1817 Kanji characters (character set ing to JIS X 0208) or 2953 bytes of data in a single QR code.

Well, the QR which stands for quick response code is basically a barcode on steroids. While the barcode holds information horizontally, the QR code does so both horizontally and vertically. This enables the QR code to hold over a hundred times more information.
It encodes 3 bytes into 4 selected from a reduced 64-character alphabet. It is a sensible default choice. It can be included literally in JSON, HTML/XML attributes, CSS and, of course, URLs. All of this means base64 data can end up in QR codes, where a URL containing a blob of data is encoded.
