The daguerreotype was the primary method of photography used in this era, as it took the shortest time compared to all other methods (not that there were many options.) It took at least 15 minutes to take a single snapshot! In comparison, the first photograph took eight hours, so 15 minutes was nothing.

The Tradition of Not Smiling for Painted Portraits This early custom was because wide-mouthed, toothy grins were considered inappropriate for portraiture. Even in other kinds of old paintings, a persons wide smiles were often associated with madness, drunkenness, or otherwise informal, immature behavior.
Daguerreotypes were produced on a silvered copper plate. At first it took 3-15 minutes to take a picture. People had to pick a pose and expression they could hold for a long time! Each one cost around a guinea (nearly 600 today).
Photos Took Up To 15 Minutes To Snap, Which Was Too Long To Keep A Smile Going: Shutter speeds have come a long way since the early days of photography, as today, we can take photos in a fraction of a second.
The wet-collodion process is one of the earliest photographic processes. Photographers created their own glass plates and coated them with a solution of collodion (cellulose nitrate) and a soluble iodide. The plate was then immersed in a solution of silver nitrate in the darkroom.
Though early daguerreotype images required an exposure of around twenty minutes, by the early 1840s it had been reduced to about twenty seconds. Even so, photography subjects needed to remain completely still for long periods of time for the image to come out crisp and not blurred by their movement.
The first fully functioning photo booth premiered in Hamburg, Germany at the First International Exposition of Amateur Photography in 1890. Known as the Bosco Automat, it took 3 minutes to develop a ferrotype and was ultimately unsuccessful. There were plenty of attempts before the relative success of the Bosco.
