What is lean for peak EGT?
Beginning at full rich, as you reduce the fuel flow (i.e. you lean the engine) the exhaust gas temperature will rise. Eventually, it docHubes a maximum, or peak temperature (peak EGT) and any further leaning causes the EGT to drop. Mixture settings that are rich of peak EGT provide more power.
What is considered high EGT?
If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
Too high
What EGT is too high?
Lean, rich or peak, what were referring to is the mixture setting. Beginning at full rich, as you reduce the fuel flow (i.e. you lean the engine) the exhaust gas temperature will rise. Eventually, it docHubes a maximum, or peak temperature (peak EGT) and any further leaning causes the EGT to drop.
What temp should peak EGT be?
During normal driving, on a level road, EGTs should be in the 600 to 800-degree range. A lower cruising EGT can be a great indicator of getting good fuel economy. Even during normal driving, exhaust gas temperature is a value that can tell you how efficiently your engine is working at a given moment, gear, and speed. Why does EGT decrease after leaning beyond peak EGT?
A rich mixture, such as during takeoff, will have a much lower EGT than a properly leaned cylinder during cruise. Basically, it is all about the fuel mixture, and no amount of messing with the engine baffling will affect the EGTs. What is the maximum normal exhaust temperature?
Typically, the car exhaust pipes docHub a temperature of 400-500 degrees Fahrenheit. But some performance vehicles might have temperatures in the range of 800-1000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Causes
What causes low EGT?
As the mixture is leaned and we move to the right, all tracked parameters increase and peak, but at different points. For example, the most HP is available at around 100 degrees (F) rich of peak EGT (ROP). (For economy, many airframe manufacturers recommend running the engine in this range, usually 50-75 degrees ROP.)
What is a safe range for EGT?
Commonly, diesel performance enthusiasts will ask: Whats a safe EGT? The short answer is anything sustained below 1350 degrees Fahrenheit is acceptable by most OEM standards so long as your other engine temperatures remain within safe boundaries.
Normal levels
What are normal EGT levels?
When dealing with a diesel vehicle, your EGT is a critical factor in its performance. Generally speaking, the lower your EGT, the better. At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety.
