Most women will have at least one abnormal Pap smear result in their lifetime, with an overall average of 5% of all Pap tests coming back as “abnormal.” In most cases, the abnormal result is nothing to worry about, but it's important to follow up to make sure.
If your results are abnormal, your doctor's office may call you to set up additional tests or procedures. If your results are abnormal, do not panic. Not all abnormal pap tests show cancer or even pre-cancerous cell growth.
Some conditions that cause abnormal Pap smear results can produce uncomfortable symptoms, such as: Pain, itching or burning around the genital area during sexual intercourse or urination. Unusual vaginal discharge. Rashes, sores, warts or bumps around the genital area. Vaginal soreness and pain.
Abnormal Pap test results: An abnormal test result may also be called a positive test result. Some of the cells of the cervix look different from the normal cells. An abnormal test result does not mean you have cancer. Your health care provider will recommend monitoring, more testing, or treatment.
There's no need to panic When you hear that your Pap smear results were abnormal, you might feel some anxiety. Although worry is a common and normal reaction, it's important to know that your test results merely showed that you have an infection or unusual cells known as dysplasia. None of this means you have cancer.
The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately.
Unclear (ASC-US) It is common for test results to come back unclear. Your doctor may use other words to describe this result, like equivocal, inconclusive, or ASC-US. These all mean the same thing—that your cervical cells look like they could be abnormal. It is not clear if it's related to HPV.
An unsatisfactory cytology result is reported when there are insufficient cells for the cytopathologist to properly evaluate the specimen. This occurs in approximately 2% of cytologic samples.
Unsatisfactory Pap test results: The lab sample may not have had enough cells, or the cells may have been clumped together or hidden by blood or mucus. Your health care provider will ask you to come in for another Pap test in 2 to 4 months.
