Put commas and periods within quotation marks, except when a parenthetical reference follows.
The period is not part of the quotation, but the sentence itself. Its meant as a placeholder and marks the end of the sentence, not the quote. Grammatically in my opinion, the period should always be at the end because thats always how a sentence ends.
The ellipsis mark indicates that you left some material out of a direct quote. It consists of three spaced periods with a space before and after each one ( . . . ) Example: The health reporter wrote that obese children are ten times more likely to suffer from heart attacks . . . than non-obese children.
Also make sure that you place quotation marks correctly with respect to other punctuation marks and with citations. 1. The final period or comma goes inside the quotation marks, even if it is not a part of the quoted material, unless the quotation is followed by a citation.
An ellipsis () is a set of three periods that indicates the omission of words from quoted material or can be used to show a pause in a conversation.
In linguistics, ellipsis means leaving out words rather than repeating them unnecessarily; for example, saying I want to go but I cant instead of I want to go but I cant go.
An ellipsis ( ) consists of three evenly spaced periods and is used to indicate the omission of words or suggest an incomplete thought.
