The menstrual cycle begins with menstruation. Once the bleeding stops, the uterine lining becomes thicker and begins to prepare for the possibility of a pregnancy. Somewhere around day 14, an egg is released from one of the ovaries and begins its journey down the fallopian tubes to the uterus. If sperm are present in the fallopian tube, fertilization can occur. If the egg is not fertilized, the egg breaks down and hormonal changes signal the uterus to prepare to shed its lining, bringing us back to day one of the menstrual cycle. Please watch my next video if you want a more in-depth overview of how menstruation works.

What to do if your dog faints: Put your hands over the heart and see if you can feel a heartbeat. Try to tell if the heart rate is very, very slow or extremely rapid. Try to videotape the episode quickly. Seek immediate veterinary attention.
The treatment for vasovagal syncope will focus on managing the underlying cause of the condition. If the syncope is caused by fear or pain, measures should be taken to address those issues. If the syncope is caused by strenuous exercise, the dog should be restricted from that activity.
Fainting is more common in some breeds of dog, e.g. Miniature Schnauzers, Westies, Boxers and Dobermanns because these breeds are more likely to suffer from specific cardiac diseases that can cause fainting. Many of the medical conditions that can cause fainting are more prevalent in older dogs.
Heart-related syncope can often be treated, but the risk of death is higher in these patients. In any case of canine syncope, it is important to get as accurate a diagnosis as possible, in order to understand how best to proceed as well as to understand the potential outcomes.
Symptoms of Syncope in Dogs Your dog may lean or stagger at first and then fall to one side. Urination and (rarely) defecation may occur concurrently with the fall. Other symptoms, which are also useful in arriving at a diagnosis, may include an underlying heart murmur or arrhythmia.
When they do occur the episodes last less than a minute with a rapid full recovery to normal behaviour almost immediately. The biggest concern is to rule out any serious underlying disease that may be a threat to your pet and for your vet to be able to recommend the best treatment in individual cases.
A typical syncopal episode will start suddenly with no pre-ictal phase, often during physical activity and exertion. The dog may initially appear weak or wobbly and, if observed, this period will be short-lived. When the dog collapses, he will go suddenly limp.
Syncope events are preceded by prodromal symptoms like blurred vision, diaphoresis, nausea, dizziness, weakness, and then leads to bradycardia, decreased blood pressure, and then lose consciousness. Patients appear pale to the onlookers.
