Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, section 74 (1) deems that all cars must have a clear view through their front and side windows to drive on the highway. Under specific circumstances, yes, your windshield could shatter if it has a crack that compromises its integrity. However, it wont shatter and spray tiny shards of glass all over the inside of your vehicle because windshields are made from laminated glass.
A safety standards certificate is valid for 36 calendar days after the inspection. Please note that if it expires before you register your vehicle, you will have to pay for a new inspection and certificate.
The federal regulations from the U.S. Department of Transportation no crack larger than 3/4 inch in diameter, no two cracks within three inches of each other, no intersecting cracks, or cracks directly in the drivers view are the minimum standards. Your state may have additional and possibly stricter requirements.
An annual CVIP Inspection is required for any vehicle with a registered weight of 11,794 kg or greater when operating within Alberta, or 4500 kg or greater when operating extra-provincially. If the CVIP expires current Alberta Legislation allows the vehicle to return to a facility to obtain the inspection.
Cracks that would not have to repaired in order to pass are: Any crack that extends less than 50 mm into the windshield wiper area. Any star-shape chip with a diameter of less than 13 mm in the windshield wiper area. Any crack that is longer than 50 mm, but outside the windshield wiper area.
