You may have spotting for a few days leading up to your period while your uterus prepares to shed its lining. After your period, the bleeding may taper off slowly. You may only notice a little blood on the toilet paper you use to wipe, or you may see stains accumulate on your underwear throughout the day.
Syncope means fainting or passing out. When fainting is caused by certain triggers, like the sight of blood or a needle, or an intense emotion like fear or fright, its called vasovagal syncope. Its the most common cause of fainting. Vasovagal syncope is sometimes referred to as a neurocardiogenic or reflex syncope.
Some people do experience fainting spells during their periods. In many cases, hormonal changes in the body during your period may be part of the reason. These can lead to lower blood pressure, less blood volume, lower blood sugar, anemia, and a more sensitive vagal response.
Cedars-Sinai Health Library Vasovagal Syncope.
If a person is losing a lot of blood from a heavy period, and it is making them feel weak, dizzy, or sick, they should visit the emergency room (ER).
Some people feel dizzy or lightheaded during their period. However, this is not a typical menstrual cycle symptom. It may indicate an underlying issue, such as anemia or heavy bleeding. Sometimes, the dizziness that a person experiences has no connection to their period, and the timing is merely coincidental.
In most cases, spotting should not cause concern. Often, hormonal changes due to birth control, pregnancy, or menopause can trigger it. Sometimes, particularly in the latter stages of pregnancy, spotting can indicate a complication. In people who are not pregnant, spotting may be a sign of an STI or cervical cancer.
The vasovagal syncope trigger causes your heart rate and blood pressure to drop suddenly. That leads to reduced blood flow to your brain, causing you to briefly lose consciousness.
