The only absolutely accurate determination of the time of death is the uncommon circumstance in which a person died with a physician or other skilled medical professional present. The doctor could make the determination and mark the time, and even this is assuming his watch or the clock on the wall was accurate.
Temperature. The temperature of a body can be used to estimate time of death during the first 24 hours. Core temperature falls gradually with time since death, and depends on body mass, fat distribution and ambient temperature.
The time of death of a victim can be determined through various methods used in forensic science, including measuring body temperature, examining livor mortis, and evaluating rigor mortis. Chemical analysis of certain substances in the body can also provide insights into the time of death.
The classifications are natural, accident, suicide, homicide, undetermined, and pending. Only medical examiners and coroners may use all of the manners of death. Other certifiers must use natural or refer the death to the medical examiner.
As the blood pools, patches appear on the skin within 30 minutes of death. About two to four hours postmortem, these patches join up, creating large dark purplish areas towards the bottom of the body and lightening the skin elsewhere. This may be less apparent on darker skin. This process is called livor mortis.
In instances where a crime or foul play is suspected, the medical examiner or coroner takes responsibility for filling out the death certificate. Physicians should not be concerned if the manner of death is natural, suicide, homicide, accident, or indeterminable.
This is because despite all of the advancements made in science, time of death is still one of the least reliable methodologies we have. There are just too many variables that can skew results for it to be an exact science.
Approximate Interval between Onset and Death. Record the interval between the presumed onset of the condition (not the diagnosis of the condition) and the date of death. This should be entered for all conditions in Part I. These intervals usually are established by the physician on the basis of available information.
