Why are my page numbers highlighted in gray?

Headers and footers, where page numbers usually reside, are greyed out when the insertion point is in the main body of the document. This cannot be changed.

Why is insert page numbers greyed out?

If the Current Page Number looks grayed out when you go to edit it, it means that you either havent created a text frame or that you havent left-clicked inside the frame. This is easily fixed.

How do I fix greyed out text in Word?

It is because the text is within a field. To confirm that it is a field, press Alt+F9 to toggle on the display of field codes and see if your text is enclosed within a pair of field delimiters { }. Use Alt+F9 again to toggle off the display of the field codes.
