A partial tear manifesting as enlargement of the ACL and increased internal signal intensity but with visible intact fascicles has been termed an interstitial tear (or delaminated tear).
Grade one: The injury stretched your ACL enough to damage it, but its still in one piece and holding your knee bones together. Grade two: The injury stretched your ACL so much that it was partially torn and loosened. Grade three: A complete tear your ACL is in two pieces.
ACL injuries are considered sprains and vary in severity. ACL Sprain (Grade 1): The ligament is damaged and stretched but can keep the knee stable. Partial ACL Tear (Grade 2): The ACL stretches and becomes loose.
Signs and symptoms that indicate an injured ACL Swelling, typically 6-24 hours after your injury. Pain, which tends to get worse if you put weight on it. Trouble continuing to play your sport. Loss of full range of motion.
Common symptoms of a torn ACL include a popping sound at the time of injury, knee pain, swelling and knee instability, especially during weight-bearing activity.
Partial ACL Tear (Grade 2): The ACL stretches and becomes loose. Doctors often refer to this type of ACL injury as a partial tear of the ligament. This type of ACL tear is not common. Complete ACL Tear/Complete Ligament Tear (Grade 3): The ACL is completely torn split into two pieces making the knee unstable.
A Grade 3 ACL tear is a complete tear of the ligament. It is accompanied by severe pain and obvious swelling and bruising. The knee will feel completely unstable and without the ability bear weight. Surgical repair of a Grade 3 tear is likely although not always necessary.
