Primary signs of ACL rupture are increased signal on MRI, fiber discontinuity, abnormal orientation and undetectable fibers [11]. MRI-derived measures of the signal intensity (SI) of the ACL graft have been described as an independent predictor of graft properties [9].
Posterior knee pain in flexion and deep central knee pain is the most consistent finding in symptomatic patients with ACL mucoid degeneration. Pain is usually aggravated by staircase activities or full knee extension.
Mucoid degeneration is often mistaken for a chronic or acute interstitial tear at MR imaging 3, 6, 9. Abnormal signal intensity of the ACL is one of the primary signs of a tear but, unlike tears, in mucoid degeneration there is no discontinuity of the fibers, and secondary signs of tear are absent (6).
Treatment for MDACL usually starts non-surgically with anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy. Surgical treatment involves arthroscopic debridement of ACL, with partial or total resection, occasionally combined with ACL reconstruction.
Types of ACL Injuries Grade 1 least severe ACL injury. Means you stretched but didnt quite tear, the ACL. The ligament can still keep the knee joint stable. Grade 2 a partial tear. Means you stretched the ACL, making it loose. Grade 3 most severe ACL injury. Means a complete or near complete tear.
Mucoid degeneration (MD) of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a rare pathological entity with disputed theories of origin. It is characterized by infiltration of mucoid like substance (glycosaminoglycans) interspersed within the substance of ACL causing knee pain and limited motion.
In contrast to the tear, mucoid degeneration of the ACL characteristically does not cause knee instability [20,21,22]. Recent studies have reported that the prevalence of ACL mucoid degeneration is approximately 214% [20,23,24,25]. The main MRI finding of ACL mucoid degeneration is a celery stalk appearance [26,27].
Severe pain and inability to continue activity. Rapid swelling. Loss of range of motion. A feeling of instability or giving way with weight bearing.
