An evaporation line (or evap line) typically appears like a faded streak, while a faint positive test result looks like a lighter blue or pink line, depending on the test dye color. This article provides an overview of home pregnancy test results.
As the test dries and the urine evaporates, this caught ink is pulled to the surface and becomes darker. This is why the most important rule for getting a true positive pregnancy test is: do not read them after the allotted time! The results are only accurate in the time frame specified in the instructions.
Do evaporation lines get darker the longer it sits? Not usually, no. If your line is getting darker, its more likely to be either the control line (this is generally the darkest line on a pregnancy test) or a positive result. Evaporation lines on pregnancy tests usually get lighter as your pee evaporates.
Evaporation lines are colorless streaks, not actual lines. They typically appear if a person waits for longer than the suggested time to read the test result. An evaporation line can also appear if the test gets wet.
Tests that show two line results have what are known as indent lines where the ink pools. One line is for the control line and one is for the positive result (if there is one). As the ink moves across the results window, it will collect in one or both of these indents.
Its an Evap Line So how do you know if the line is a positive result or simply an indent? If the line has no color or does not appear until after your test has dried, you can assume its an indent. For this reason, you should never read a pregnancy test after the allotted time, which is often 10 minutes (3).
If you had a true evaporation line, future tests will show a negative result. On the other hand, if your test showed a faint line, you should continue to see the line darkening with each day that progresses. (See image below.) An evaporation line will not do this.
Should Pregnancy Test Lines Get Darker? Although hCG levels increase exponentially during early pregnancy, that doesnt mean that the pregnancy test line will necessarily get darker as each day passes.
