What causes faint positive lines on a pregnancy test? The strength of the positive test line depends on how much hCG is in your urine. If the line is faint, it usually means that the hCG level is low. One reason why hCG levels may be low could be because youre still very early into your pregnancy.
In a healthy pregnancy, the levels of the hormone should double every 2 to 3 days. While the line might be faint at the very beginning of pregnancy, as time goes on and the pregnancy advances, the line that the test produces should get darker and more apparent.
Evaporation lines are colorless streaks, not faint lines. They typically appear if a person waits for longer than the suggested time to read the test result. An evaporation line can also appear if the test gets wet. An evaporation line does not indicate pregnancy.
If you had a true evaporation line, future tests will show a negative result. On the other hand, if your test showed a faint line, you should continue to see the line darkening with each day that progresses. (See image below.) An evaporation line will not do this.
A barely visible pregnancy test result usually cant be negative because it detected hCG but it might indicate a false positive or an early pregnancy loss. However, false positive results that are not related to early pregnancy loss are incredibly rare.
In a healthy pregnancy, the levels of the hormone should double every 2 to 3 days. While the line might be faint at the very beginning of pregnancy, as time goes on and the pregnancy advances, the line that the test produces should get darker and more apparent.
The amount of this hormone doubles every two to three days until it stabilizes between 13 and 16 weeks of pregnancy. In the very early days of a pregnancy, a test done later in the day may also produce a faint line because the hormone is more diluted by your fluid intake.
As the test dries and the urine evaporates, this caught ink is pulled to the surface and becomes darker. This is why the most important rule for getting a true positive pregnancy test is: do not read them after the allotted time! The results are only accurate in the time frame specified in the instructions.
If you saw a faint positive result and retested in a few days with a negative result (or you got your period after testing positive), you may have experienced a chemical pregnancy or early miscarriage. A chemical pregnancy means the egg was fertilized but didnt completely implant.
Do evaporation lines get darker the longer it sits? Not usually, no. If your line is getting darker, its more likely to be either the control line (this is generally the darkest line on a pregnancy test) or a positive result. Evaporation lines on pregnancy tests usually get lighter as your pee evaporates.
