In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection. Inflammation in the pelvic area. Normal cellular changes that occur with age.
Bleeding or spotting after a Pap smear isn't unusual, even for people without infections, cancer, or other conditions. The delicate tissues of your cervix can bleed after a brush or swab scratches the surface.
A normal (or “negative”) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. This is good news. But you still need to get Pap tests in the future. New cell changes can still form on your cervix.
AGUS stands for atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance. These cells were slightly abnormal on your Pap smear. AGUS can occur with infections or with a change in the cells on the surface of your cervix or in the canal of your cervix.
What Does It Mean if a Pap Smear Is Abnormal? Healthy cervical cells are thin and flat. If your Pap test is abnormal, this means that your sample contained abnormally shaped cervical cells. Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous.
Inflammation. If inflammation (redness) is present in the cells on the Pap smear, it means that some white blood cells were seen on your Pap smear. Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem.
The cervix is lined with glands that normally secrete mucus. These endocervical glands can become filled with secretions that accumulate as a pimple-like elevation called Nabothian cysts. These cysts are not a threat to health and no treatment is necessary.
With cervical cancer, you may notice discharge that is foul-smelling and pink, brown or bloody in colour. Sometimes, the discharge may include chunks of tissue or necrotic material as a result of infection of the tumours, creating a foul smelling vaginal discharge.
Things to look out for after cervical screening You may have some spotting or light bleeding after your cervical screening test. This is very common and should go away after a few hours.
Cervical irritation During a Pap smear, a healthcare professional takes a small sample of cervical cells to screen for cervical cancer. Collecting cells from the cervix can cause light bleeding or spotting that may last for 1–2 days.
