Because the procedure touches the cervix, it can trigger vasovagal response - the stimulation of the vagus nerve which can make you lightheaded, sweaty, and dizzy. This can lower your blood pressure making you feel faint. Other side effects of smears are temporary bleeding (spotting) and cramping.
Syncope means fainting or passing out. When fainting is caused by certain triggers, like the sight of blood or a needle, or an intense emotion like fear or fright, its called vasovagal syncope. Its the most common cause of fainting. Vasovagal syncope is sometimes referred to as a neurocardiogenic or reflex syncope.
The vagus nerve, also known as the vagal nerves, are the main nerves of your parasympathetic nervous system. This system controls specific body functions such as your digestion, heart rate and immune system. These functions are involuntary, meaning you cant consciously control them.
Many benign fainting spells are triggered by a vasovagal reaction (a sudden, transient drop in blood pressure resulting in a temporary loss of consciousness), which typically occurs during activities such as eating, urinating , defecating, or standing for long periods.
Vasovagal syncope (pronounced vay-so-vay-gal sin-co-pee) happens when your blood pressure and heart rate drop suddenly, causing you to pass out or faint. Vasovagal syncope is the most common type of reflex syncope, which happens automatically for reasons you cant control.
The vagal response is a series of unpleasant symptoms that occur when the vagus nerve is stimulated. Often, this response is triggered by certain things like stress, pain, and fear. Symptoms of the vagal response include dizziness, nausea, ringing ears, and sweating. In some cases, it can make you pass out.
Types of vagal maneuvers Valsalva maneuver (bearing down like youre having a bowel movement (pooping). See below). Diving reflex. Carotid sinus massage. Gag reflex. Coughing. Handstand for 30 seconds. (In one study, healthcare providers taught parents how to help their kids do this.) Applied abdominal pressure.
Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope.
