Syncope is the medical term for fainting or passing out. It is caused by a temporary drop in the amount of blood that flows to the brain.
Causes of orthostatic hypotension Fever. Prolonged bed rest. Excessive amounts of alcohol. Some medications, such as some diuretics or antihypertensive (high blood pressure) medications. Dehydration due to vomiting, diarrhoea or both, as in gastroenteritis.
Postural syncope causes Postural syncope (also called postural hypotension or orthostatic hypotension) happens when your blood pressure drops suddenly due to a quick change in position, such as standing up after lying down. Certain medications and dehydration can lead to this condition.
Vasovagal syncope. The most common type of syncope. Occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood, extreme emotional distress, dehydration, anxiety, pain, hunger, etc.
Vasovagal syncope is characterized by sympathoexcitation, followed by vagal overcoming via the Bezold-Jarisch reflex. Orthostatic syncope is caused by response failure or a lack of sympathetic nerve activity to the orthostatic challenge, followed by fluid shift and subsequent low cerebral perfusion.
Orthostatic (upright) hypotension (low blood pressure when standing) can also cause fainting because blood has trouble going against gravity to docHub the brain. Orthostatic hypotension is defined as a fall in systolic blood pressure of 20 mmg Hg or more on standing, resulting in syncope or pre-syncope.
Most patients with vasovagal syncope present with a history of a syncopal prodrome. Patients will classically describe a feeling of lightheadedness. Feelings of warmth and nausea are common. Many patients describe tunnel vision, ringing in their ears, and profuse sweating.
Definitions. Orthostatic syncope due to blood loss is characterized by severe postural dizziness or postural pulse increment of 30 beats/minute. The sensitivity of postural pulse increment is 22% (95% CI 6%-48%) for moderate blood loss.
