Vasovagal syncope happens when you have a sudden drop in blood pressure, which causes a drop in blood flow to your brain. It often occurs after standing for a while or under emotional distress.
Vasovagal syncope is a condition that leads to fainting in some people. Its also called neurocardiogenic syncope or reflex syncope. Its the most common cause of fainting. Its usually not harmful and not a sign of a more serious problem.
Symptoms of the vagal response include dizziness, nausea, ringing ears, and sweating. In some cases, it can make you pass out. This is called vasovagal syncope. If you experience a vagal response, lie down for a few minutes or sit and place your head between your knees, and avoid standing quickly.
If your vagus nerve becomes too active, it can cause your heart rate and blood pressure to drop too much or too fast (or both). If your blood pressure drops too much, this causes an attack of vasovagal syncope, and you pass out because theres not enough blood flow to your brain.
Anyone can experience vasovagal syncope, but it tends to be more common in children and young adults. This type of fainting happens to men and women in equal numbers. Although some causes of fainting can be a sign of a more serious health problem, thats typically not the case with vasovagal syncope.
With vasovagal reactions, some people feel nauseated. Others may feel dizzy, start sweating, look pale, or have a temporary drop in heart rate or blood pressure. Some people will even faint. The next time you have your blood drawn, try relaxation techniques like deep breathing or visualization to help you feel calm.
When the vagus nerve is overstimulated, the bodys blood vessels dilate, especially those in the lower extremities, and the heart temporarily slows down. The brain is deprived of oxygen, causing the patient to lose consciousness.
How is vasovagal syncope treated? Avoiding triggers, such as standing for a long time or the sight of blood. Moderate exercise training. Discontinuing medicines that lower blood pressure, like diuretics. Eating a higher salt diet, to help keep up blood volume. Drinking plenty of fluids, to maintain blood volume.
