Flags Quiz is a fun general knowledge game that tests your knowledge of flags around the world. There are several different game modes in which you can test your flag knowledge.
Vexillology is the study of flags. The word comes from both the Latin word vexilla little sail for flag plus the Greek suffix-ology that means study of.
The stripes represent the original 13 Colonies and the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well; red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.
The scholarly study of the history, symbolism, etiquette, design, manufacture, and other aspects of flags is known as vexillology (from the Latin vexillum, banner). Such studies are fostered by many publications as well as by the International Federation of Vexillological Associations and its members.
Currently, there are 193 national flags in the world flown by sovereign states that are members of the United Nations.
A person who studies flags is called a Vexillologist. There are a number of notable vexillologists in our history, including Graham Bartram (Chief Vexillologist and Fellow of the Flag Institute), Grace Rogers Cooper, Prof. Scot Guenter, Louis Mhlemann, and many more.
When compared to the Scottish and Irish flag, the Welsh flag is the most difficult to remember, with only a 65-67% guessing the colours and lineup right. That said, the Irish symbol ranks memorable, with 92% managing to get it right. For this exercise, we collected international flag drawings from a group of 23 people.
A flag is usually, but not always, oblong and is attached by one edge to a staff or halyard. The part nearest the staff is called the hoist, and the outer part is called the fly.
