the fright stage, also known as tonic immobility, a peak of arousal and physical immobility where the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are simultaneously activated to decrease hyperarousal, and finally shuts down, wherein it may enter a profoundly dissociative state (flag) or even faint as a response
The trauma-informed approach is guided four assumptions, known as the Four Rs: Realization about trauma and how it can affect people and groups, recognizing the signs of trauma, having a system which can respond to trauma, and resisting re-traumatization.
In the most extreme situations, you might have lapses of memory or lost time. Schauer Elbert (2010) refer to the stages of trauma responses as the 6 Fs: Freeze, Flight, Fight, Fright, Flag, and Faint.
When someone develops complex PTSD and dissociation, it is their minds way of coping with an intensely traumatic experience. But this development does not resolve the trauma; in fact, it brings symptoms that are distressing and confusing and that stand in the way of a fulfilling life.
In general, there are three phases of trauma treatment: Safety Stabilization, Processing Trauma and Integration Connecting with others (this concept was originally described by Pierre Janet, one of the first psychologists to really explore the impact of trauma and dissociation in therapy).
The anger and bargaining stages can be quite lively, while depression moves you into a quieter and slower stage of trauma. The depression stage comes nearly at the end of the trauma process after you have moved through the previous coping stages of denial, anger, and bargaining.
Flag. The flag response is characterized by numbness of emotion, cognitive failure, a drop in arousal, and surrender. Schauer and Elbert (2015) assert that the flag response is part of a sequence of six fear responses that progress as a function of defense during a life-threatening situation.
Herman breaks the recovery process from trauma into these five stages: Denial Nothing happened Bargaining Something happened, but Anger Something happened, and Im angry about it. Sadness Something happened, and it cost me a lot. Acceptance Something happened, and I have healed from it.
