okay so one of my favorite things that patients always say is is the pap smear going to hurt me listen if i was a woman i wouldnt want to be getting a pap smear why because its not the most comfortable thing but you want to be with a provider thats going to take you through it step by step so heres the speculum this is what we use to look inside the vagina when were looking and were doing your pap smear were looking at your cervix so this is the side view of your uterus your cervix your vagina and what we want to do is place a speculum on the inside to look at the uterus and the cervix from here what we do is that we take the brush we go inside we take a little swab sample there we take the spatula which is another one to get more cells and then what we do is we put it in the solution and send it off to pathology to get a screening of what that area looks like and what it looks for is that area we talked about before that transition area where the virus might be sitting or there

What Does It Mean if a Pap Smear Is Abnormal? Healthy cervical cells are thin and flat. If your Pap test is abnormal, this means that your sample contained abnormally shaped cervical cells. Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous.
Cervical cell classes: (A) normal squamous, (B) normal columnar, and (C) low-grade dysplasia; (D) high-grade dysplasia (HGD) with moderate dysplasia, (E) HGD with severe dysplasia, and (F) carcinoma in situ.

Follow-up tests and procedures after an abnormal Pap test (Pap smear) or HPV test. Keep in mind that most people with abnormal cervical screening test results do not have cancer. Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
It is common for test results to come back unclear. Your doctor may use other words to describe this result, like equivocal, inconclusive, or ASC-US. These all mean the same thingthat your cervical cells look like they could be abnormal. It is not clear if its related to HPV.
