Fainting is a common problem, accounting for 3% of emergency room visits and 6% of hospital admissions. A person may feel faint and lightheaded (presyncope) or lose consciousness (syncope).
A faint can be caused by tiredness, dehydration, severe pain, anxiety, low blood pressure, low blood sugar levels, heart attack or stroke. If you feel you are about to faint, lie on the ground with your legs raised until the feeling passes.
The most common cause of blacking out is fainting. Other causes include epileptic seizures, syncope due to anxiety (psychogenic pseudosyncope) and other rare causes of faints. Other causes of blacking out may be due to low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) and lack of oxygen (hypoxia) from a variety of causes.
Fainting can be a symptom of severe malnutrition and can occur after several days or even weeks of consuming only 100 calories a day.
Fainting is a short-term loss of consciousness. It happens because of a sudden drop in blood flow to your brain. A fainting episode usually lasts a few seconds or minutes.
When coming round after a faint, the person often feels awful, sickly and may vomit, or even have diarrhoea. Often there is prolonged fatigue after a faint.
Common causes of fainting include heat, pain, distress, the sight of blood, anxiety and hyperventilating. Lying the person down will often improve the persons condition. Frequent fainting spells need to be medically investigated to check for underlying causes.
Most people who faint stay out a few seconds to less than a minute. If the person is unconscious for a longer time, call 911.
