Reference data from other sheets An exclamation mark separates a sheet name from a cell name. To reference data ranges from multiple sheets, just list them using commas: =SUM(Sheet1! E2:E13,Sheet2! B1:B5)
If our data set contains numbers formatted as text, either in the main or lookup table, the VLOOKUP formula will usually return a #N/A error. This usually happens when we copy or import data from other sources instead of entering it manually.
This adds the worksheet name followed by an exclamation mark right before the range, which tells VLOOKUP which worksheet we want to use to pull data. The formula then searches for the value in B2 in the A15:B25 range on Sheet2. It then returns a match from column 2 in our designated cell on Sheet1.
! is a separator in Excel which separates Sheet Name with that of the Cell reference. ! is suffixed to the sheet name. For example, =Sheet1! A19. This indicates A19 value in Sheet1.
In practice, the Excel VLOOKUP function is rarely used with data in the same worksheet. Most often you will have to pull matching data from a different worksheet. To Vlookup from a different Excel sheet, put the worksheets name followed by an exclamation mark in the tablearray argument before the range reference.
In Microsoft Excel, an exclamation point is applied to differentiate a sheet name from a cell reference used in a formula. This delimiter (!) is utilized when the formula written one sheet uses a cell reference of a different sheet. There are some calculations that may require values from other sheets.
It is the icon for files with macros-enabled. If you Save As and select Excel Workbook as the file type, it will go away along with any macros within.
Excel allows you to refer to any cell on any worksheet, which can be especially helpful if you want to reference a specific value from one worksheet to another. To do this, youll simply need to begin the cell reference with the worksheet name followed by an exclamation point (!).
