Laser engraving is a process that vaporizes materials into fumes to engrave permanent, deep marks. The laser beam acts as a chisel, incising marks by removing layers from the surface of the material. The laser hits localized areas with massive levels of energy to generate the high heat required for vaporization.
The Laser Etching Process It removes 0.001 or less of the material.
Its a truth universally accepted by experts that 3mm band is the minimum width for engraving. Some jewellers might let you push it to 2mm, but you mightnt be happy with the end result.
Yes, laser etching is permanent. A laser etched mark will remain readable for the parts useful life with better readability than other direct part marking technologies.
Examples of contemporary uses for engraving include creating text on jewellery, such as pendants or on the inside of engagement- and wedding rings to include text such as the name of the partner, or adding a winners name to a sports trophy. There are three types of laser engraving: etching, deep laser engraving, and laser ablation (the difference between the three is what the surface is and how much you remove)
For metals 0.01 mm to 0.25 mm in thickness, the minimum standard etching tolerance is 0.025 mm. For thicknesses above this (to a maximum of 1.5mm) the minimum standard etching tolerance is typically 10% metal thickness.
The main difference between laser etching and laser engraving is that etching melts the micro surface to create raised marks, whereas engraving removes material to create deep marks.
We typically recommend that the smallest that you go with most text is 12pt font. Anything smaller than this becomes tricky to read once engraved. To make things a little more visual, weve engraved a few samples on bamboo plywood, clear acrylic and birch plywood.
