Vasovagal syncope is usually harmless and requires no treatment. But its possible that you may injure yourself during a vasovagal syncope episode. Your doctor may recommend tests to rule out more-serious causes of fainting, such as heart disorders.
Vasovagal syncope is caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure, often triggered by a reaction to something. This causes your heart to slow down for a short time. As a result, your brain may not get enough oxygen-rich blood, which causes you to pass out. Vasovagal syncope is typically not a serious health condition.
After an episode of vasovagal syncope, many people will feel nauseous, dizzy, and extremely tired for a few hours. Sometimes these symptoms can last for a day or even longer. Until these symptoms disappear, you are at risk of fainting again.
What causes vasovagal syncope? Standing for long periods. Excess heat. Intense emotion, such as fear. Intense pain. The sight of blood or a needle. Prolonged exercise. Dehydration. Skipping meals.
Common triggers include: Needles or medical instruments. Vasovagal syncope is usually what causes people to faint when they have blood drawn or when they donate blood. Some people also pass out at the sight of certain medical tools or instruments, such as scalpels.
In most cases of vasovagal syncope, you have some warning that you are near fainting. These signs include dizziness, feeling hot or cold, nausea, pale skin, tunnel-like vision, disturbance of hearing, and profuse sweating. After the episode, symptoms may continue because of continued low blood pressure.
A vasovagal episode or vasovagal syncope is the most common form of reflex syncope. Reflex syncope describes any form of syncopal episode caused by a failure in the autoregulation of blood pressure, and ultimately, a drop in cerebral perfusion pressure resulting in a transient loss of consciousness.
These may include foot exercises, wearing compression stockings or tensing your leg muscles when standing. You may need to increase salt in your diet if you dont usually have high blood pressure. Avoid prolonged standing especially in hot, crowded places and drink plenty of fluids.
This has allowed us to analyze in more detail the complex sequence of hemodynamic changes leading up to syncope in the laboratory. All tilt-sensitive patients appear to progress through 4 phases: (1) early stabilization, (2) circulatory instability, (3) terminal hypotension, and (4) recovery.
Once you come to, youll usually recover quickly (in about 20 to 30 seconds). Disorientation or confusion either doesnt happen or they dont last longer than 30 seconds. The following may also occur: Anxiety or nervousness.
