A Pap test result can be normal, unclear, abnormal, or unsatisfactory. A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. It is common for test results to come back unclear. An abnormal result means that cell changes were found on your cervix. A normal, also called negative, Pap smear result indicates that no evidence of abnormal cells were found in the sample. An abnormal, or positive, result on a Pap smear indicates that abnormal cells were detected in the sample and additional treatment or testing may be necessary.
A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. This is good news. But you still need to get Pap tests in the future. New cell changes can still form on your cervix.

Low-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions (LSIL) means there are low-grade changes that are usually caused by an HPV infection. Your health care provider will likely ask you to come back for more testing, as explained on page 10, to make sure that there are not more serious (high-grade) changes.
