Drink plenty of water before your blood test. This helps keep your blood pressure from dropping. The leading cause of fainting and dizziness during a blood test is a drop in blood pressure. Avoid coffee or other caffeinated drinks before your test because they actually cause your body to expel water.
What is syncope? Syncope (SINK-a-pee) is another word for fainting or passing out. Someone is considered to have syncope if they become unconscious and go limp, then soon recover. For most people, syncope occurs once in a great while, if ever, and is not a sign of serious illness.
If a patient faints during the venipuncture, immediately abort the procedure by gently removing the tourniquet and needle from the patients arm, applying gauze and pressure to the skin puncture site, and calling for assistance. If the patient is seated, place the patients head between his/her knees.
Heres how to make the blood draw easier Get a good nights sleep and drink plenty of water. Ask your doctor if you need to fast before the blood draw. Wear short sleeves. Take your prescribed medications beforehand unless a health care professional advises you otherwise. Bring your insurance card and identification.
The heart rate may slow dramatically at the time of the faint, and the blood vessels (mainly the veins) in the body expand, causing blood to pool in the lower extremities and the bowels, resulting in less blood return to the heart and a low blood pressure (hypotension).
Put simply, fainting happens when there is a drop in blood flow to the brain. When the brain isnt getting the blood (and importantly, the oxygen) it needs, it causes you to lose consciousness and fall down. Fascinatingly (and perhaps counterintuitively), falling is the bodys way of trying to recover.
lightheadedness. sweating. changes to your breathing, such as breathing faster and deeply. altered vision, such as blurring and seeing spots or lights.
However, some people with a fear of blood or needles experience an initial increase and then a sudden drop in their blood pressure, which can result in fainting. This drop in blood pressure is called the vasovagal response. Only a small minority of people have this response at the sight of blood or needles.
During a vasovagal syncope episode, bystanders may notice: Jerky, abnormal movements. A slow, weak pulse.Symptoms Pale skin. Lightheadedness. Tunnel vision your field of vision narrows so that you see only whats in front of you. Nausea. Feeling warm. A cold, clammy sweat. Blurred vision.
But if youre having a fasting blood test, you will be told not to eat or drink anything (other than water) beforehand. You may also be told not to smoke before your test.
