Can faint lines also denote a negative result? In most cases, faint lines result from HCG detection and can denote a true pregnancy, an early pregnancy loss or a false positive pregnancy. However, there are a few instances where faint lines on a pregnancy test can also result in negative results.
In many cases, when you are using a First Response test, the test line may be a fainter pink than the control line, which is sometimes quite dark. A test line can be faint pink if your urine is diluted or its very early in your pregnancy.
If you check your results within the recommended time frame and see a faint positive line, youre most likely pregnant. On the other hand, if you miss the window for checking the results and you dont check the test until 10 minutes later, a faint line may be an evaporation line, which means youre not pregnant.
Unfortunately, it is possible to have a faint positive, only to get a negative when you retest a few days later. If this happens to you, it may be that you have had a very early miscarriage. Sadly, miscarriages are very common, with a quarter of pregnancies thought to be affected. Learn more about early miscarriage.
What is an evaporation line? An evaporation line is a slight streak that appears where the positive line on a pregnancy test should be. Evaporation lines are colorless streaks, not faint lines. They typically appear if a person waits for longer than the suggested time to read the test result.
An evaporation line (or evap line) typically appears like a faded streak, while a faint positive test result looks like a lighter blue or pink line, depending on the test dye color.
Instead, it could simply mean that theres not enough hCG yet for the test to detect. This is called a false negative result. The hCG level doubles approximately every 2 days so the chance of a false negative occurring decreases the longer you wait to test.
A test line can be faint pink if your urine is diluted or its very early in your pregnancy. Not-to-worry, though. Even a faintly pink-colored test line indicates a positive result. Simply put, if there is color on the test line, its time to check in with your doctor to confirm a pregnancy.
