Here are some symptoms that show that the sensor is failing: Poor engine performance and fuel economy: When the exhaust pressure sensor fails, the engine will not be able to perform optimally. The fuel will burn faster because the sensor no longer signals the regeneration process.
Exhaust gas temperature sensor - Symptoms: Effects Warning lamp for glow plug system flashes. Warning lamp for particulate filter lights up. Engine control lamp is on. Increase in exhaust emissions (CO, NOx and HC) Poor driving behaviour because of shortened regeneration intervals of the particulate filter.
To diagnose a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor, consider the following steps: Conduct an electronic test and read any fault codes using a diagnostic tool. Inspect the connectors for signs of corrosion or loose connections. Check the wiring for any breaks or damage that could cause a short to the ground.
Increase in exhaust emissions (CO, NOx and HC) Poor driving behaviour because of shortened regeneration intervals of the particulate filter. Increased fuel consumption caused by longer particulate filter regeneration. Loss of performance caused by incorrect detection of the degree of saturation of the particulate
Common causes of exhaust gas temperature sensor failure is exposure to excessively high temperatures over 900C in some cases, the very thing they protect other components from.
Overall, the EGT gauge tells us the temperature of the exhaust gas, which is really an indication of the fuel mixture coming out of the cylinder after the combustion process occurs. A rich mixture, such as during takeoff, will have a much lower EGT than a properly leaned cylinder during cruise.
Common fault codes include: P0544: Exhaust gas temperature sensor, bank 1, sensor 1 - circuit malfunction. P0546: Exhaust gas temperature sensor, bank 1, sensor 1 - high input. P2033: Exhaust gas temperature bank 1, sensor 2 - circuit high.
