So, is diamond fluorescence good or bad? Well, that depends. The more expensive diamonds (large and high color, think D-E-F) are far more valuable when they exhibit no fluorescence. But for most other diamonds, especially diamonds with Faint fluorescence, this phenomenon rarely impacts the diamonds visual nature.
High Fluorescence Means Hazy Diamonds Medium Blue diamonds rarely appear hazy. Slight/Faint Blue diamonds never appear hazy.
Fluorescence may not be one of the 4Cs, but it is still one of the more important characteristics to be considered in a diamond. The presence of fluorescence, or the lack of it, can impact the overall beauty, and therefore the value, of a diamond.
Some trade professionals think blue fluorescence enhances a diamonds appearance, especially in diamonds with I to M color grades. Bluish fluorescence can make a faint yellowish diamond appear more colorless in UV light, which is part of natural daylight.
Diamond Fluorescence and Near Colorless Diamonds For nearly colorless diamonds in the G-H range, we recommend faint fluorescence at most. Faint fluorescence can have the benefit of bumping your diamond up one color grade, making your near-colorless diamond appear colorless.
Diamonds with Faint fluorescence should also typically command a lower price than those with None fluorescence in the higher color grades (D I), but may command the same price or even a premium to None fluorescence in certain diamonds in the near colorless or faintly colored range.
