Commonly, diesel performance enthusiasts will ask: Whats a safe EGT? The short answer is anything sustained below 1350 degrees Fahrenheit is acceptable by most OEM standards so long as your other engine temperatures remain within safe boundaries.
Or faulty slow running jet in carburetor. Re: Low EGT at idle in one cylinder The low #2 cylinder EGT could also be due to a lean mixture or an ignition problem and that cylinder not firing.
The temperature sensor does occassionally fail in a gauge but this is not often. The most common causes of an Exhaust Temperature gauge not working is wiring or incorrect installation. If your gauge is erractically jumping around or measuring maximum temperature this is most often the cause of a damaged sensor.
If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
This is because the EGT naturally drops by around 150C as it passes through the turbocharger. While a safe reading at the turbo inlet is 700C, a safe reading at the turbo outlet (where your gauge would be connected to your Manta system) will be 550C, as mentioned above.
A rich mixture, such as during takeoff, will have a much lower EGT than a properly leaned cylinder during cruise. Basically, it is all about the fuel mixture, and no amount of messing with the engine baffling will affect the EGTs.
During normal driving, on a level road, EGTs should be in the 600 to 800-degree range. A lower cruising EGT can be a great indicator of getting good fuel economy. Even during normal driving, exhaust gas temperature is a value that can tell you how efficiently your engine is working at a given moment, gear, and speed.
