Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope.
All cases of cardiac syncope have the same general mechanism. When the heart fails to generate adequate cardiac output, the brain is inadequately perfused and temporarily malfunctions, leading to the syncopal event. Bradyarrhythmias lead to this final pathway because the heart is too slow to generate enough flow.
In most cases of vasovagal syncope, you have some warning that you are near fainting. These signs include dizziness, feeling hot or cold, nausea, pale skin, tunnel-like vision, disturbance of hearing, and profuse sweating. After the episode, symptoms may continue because of continued low blood pressure.
Syncope A sudden, brief loss of consciousness also known as fainting Two types of syncope: vasovagal syncope and cardiac syncope. Treatments include medications, lifestyle changes, and in some cases addressing a heart issue. Involves internal medicine, cardiology, cardiovascular medicine.
Fainting or loss of consciousness is a potentially serious situation and medical attention should be called for immediately. Dizziness, especially when standing up too quickly, is an extremely common symptom for people with heart failure.
Vasovagal syncope. The most common type of syncope. Occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood, extreme emotional distress, dehydration, anxiety, pain, hunger, etc.
Syncope is caused by decreased cerebral blood flow leading to transient loss of consciousness and postural tone, associated with spontaneous recovery. Symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, diaphoresis, nausea, and visual disturbances may precede it or occur suddenly with none of the above symptoms.
Red flags in syncope ECG abnormality. TLoC during exertion (syncope after stopping exercise is mostly vasovagal) Family history of sudden cardiac death in people aged younger than 40 years and/or an inherited cardiac condition. Heart failure (history or physical signs) New or unexplained breathlessness.
