An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Pap Results Are Often Inaccurate Sometimes these false positive Paps can be explained by a recent vaginal infection, or trauma to the cervix due to douching, tampons, or intercourse; sometimes the false positives just represent an inherent limitation of the test.
Unsatisfactory results on a Pap smear indicate that the sample of cervical cells obtained for the test either didnt have enough cells on the slide to be examined or the quality of the slide wasnt satisfactory. Unsatisfactory results may be followed up by a repeat Pap smear.
Most tests come back normal, but a docHub portion come back as unclear, which could be called inconclusive or ASC-US. Unclear results could mean that you have some cells that dont look quite like they should, but cant be classified as abnormal.
An inconclusive test just means that the sample that we collected wasnt useable. This can happen if youve been sexually active or used tampons with two days before your test. Your doctor will usually recommend repeating the test.
Normal: No sign of disease. This means nothing irregular was found. Unclear: The lab couldnt determine whether the cells are normal or abnormal. Your healthcare provider may have you come back immediately or in six months for another Pap smear. Abnormal: The cells look different than they should.
Because the procedure touches the cervix, it can trigger vasovagal response - the stimulation of the vagus nerve which can make you lightheaded, sweaty, and dizzy. This can lower your blood pressure making you feel faint. Other side effects of smears are temporary bleeding (spotting) and cramping.
Sometimes the results are unclear because the lab sample doesnt contain enough cells to evaluate (insufficient cell count) or because the cells are obscured by inflammation, mucus, or blood from a heavy menstrual period.
