The initial assessment for all patients presenting with syncope includes a detailed history, physical examination, and electrocardiography. The initial evaluation may diagnose up to 50% of patients and allows immediate short-term risk stratification.
The immediate cause of syncope is cerebral hypoperfusion, which may occur due to systemic vasodilation, decreased cardiac output, or both. The primary classifications of syncope are cardiac, reflex (neurogenic), and orthostatic.
Sometimes this process doesnt work, causing orthostatic hypotension. Medication side effects or not getting enough water are some common causes. This can also happen in people with diabetes, Parkinson disease, or a nervous system disorder.
Vasovagal syncope. The most common type of syncope. Occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood, extreme emotional distress, dehydration, anxiety, pain, hunger, etc.
Syncope can happen if you have: A sudden drop in blood pressure. A drop in your heart rate. Changes in the amount of blood in areas of your body.
Syncope can be classified into four categories: reflex mediated, cardiac, orthostatic, and cerebrovascular.
A thorough history and physical examination alone may yield a diagnosis in up to 50% of patients presenting with syncope. History of syncope should focus on duration, preceding events or precipitating events, and post-event findings. The position of the patient at the time of the event is important.
Sudden extreme fall in blood pressure with resultant decrease in cerebral perfusion can lead to syncope. The most common cause is Vasodepressor or vasovagal syncope.
