Payment card numbers are composed of 8 to 19 digits, The leading six or eight digits are the issuer identification number (IIN) sometimes referred to as the bank identification number (BIN). The remaining numbers, except the last digit, are the individual account identification number.
You should never send sensitive credit card details over unsecured networks that hackers can compromise. Instead, send them from your private, password-protected network. Alternatively, you can use a VPN service to encrypt your data, mask your IP address, and make your online communications untraceable.
Is it safe to share your credit card number? Sharing your credit card information can be risky when not done safely. Avoid sharing credit card details over email and text messages, or by giving people written notes.
The number on your credit card is different from your account number, although the two are linked. For example, if your credit card is lost or stolen, youll receive a new card with a different credit card number. But the account number will stay the same.
Credit card number This is often referred to as the long number on the front of your credit card, which is usually 16 digits, but can be up to 19 digits in some instances. More formally, its known as a Permanent Account Number, or PAN. Its not just a random number though.
Dont Post Photos of Your Debit Card Even if you cover half of the card details but leave the expiration date, account holders name and last four digits of the card, experienced fraudsters will be able to figure the remaining card number.
To answer your question, it is not illegal for them to keep a copy of your card on file - but unless you authorize them to charge a particular card theyre technically not supposed to do THAT. In other words, they cant just take a random card of yours and charge that without your approval.
Its not standard practice, and sounds (sorry - most likely IS) a con. Why would having a scanned photocopy of a credit card prevent fraud from their perspective? You could have just as easily stolen the credit card, and photocopy it for them. Youre still committing fraud, and theyre no better off.
