Iamp;#39;m Alice Edwards. I am the Head of Secretariat of the Convention Against Torture Initiative which is an intergovernmental initiative trying to achieve universal ratification of the UN Convention against Torture and improved implementation. I studied political science and law at the University of Tasmania. Most of my work now I would say Iamp;#39;m much more a diplomat now than I am a lawyer. I spend much more of my time engaging with states and trying to come up with arguments and to support them to change their practices for the better. One of the things that has kept me going in this work is around having met the victims of the Srebrenica massacre where they lost their husbands and sons. I did a major study for the UNHCR during that time which has since been used and has influenced the approaches to women victims of violence ever since, including then straight after, in the Kosovo conflict but also subsequently.
