You can name files using almost any character for a name, except for the following reserved characters: : / \ | ? * The maximum length for a path is 255 characters. This limitation includes the drive letter, colon, backslash, directories, subdirectories, filename, and extension.
Microsoft Excel prohibits worksheet names from containing these seven special characters: \ (backslash), / (forward slash), * (asterisk), [ (left square bracket), ] (right square bracket), : (colon), and ? (question mark).
Important: Worksheet names cannot: Be blank . Contain more than 31 characters. Contain any of the following characters: / \ ? * : [ ] Begin or end with an apostrophe (), but they can be used in between text or numbers in a name. Be named History. This is a reserved word Excel uses internally.

Guidelines for creating names The first character of a name must be a letter or an underscore character (). Remaining characters in the name can be letters, numbers, periods, and underscore characters. In some languages, Excel may replace certain characters with underscores. Spaces are not allowed.
How to delete range names in Excel Select the Fomulas ribbon and, under the Defined Names group, click on Name Manager In the Name Manager select the name (or names) to be deleted and press the Delete button: Excel will ask for confirmation and pressing Yes will permanently delete the selected named ranges.
