psme screening is an important component of Womenamp;#39;s healthc Care recently recommendations have changed about how often a woman should get a papsmear it used to be that these were recommended to be done every year in all women now weamp;#39;ve changed our guidelines so that women are actually recommended to get a Pap smear once every 3 years for women who are overage 30 your doctor may actually recommend a co- test which is actually the combination of a papsmear and an HPV test and if both of those tests are negative a woman would not require additional testing for five years um these new guidelines are based upon the fact that almost all cervical cancer is due to the virus called HPV um it takes a long time for HPV to lead to cervical cancer in a woman so even by screening less frequently such as every 3 years we have plenty of time to be able to detect the early changes of HPV and to be able to provide a woman treatment before she would develop a cervical cancer

What happens after a Pap test? Bleeding. Foul-smelling drainage from your vagina. Fever or chills. Severe abdominal pain.
Vasovagal syncope (pronounced vay-so-vay-gal sin-co-pee) happens when your blood pressure and heart rate drop suddenly, causing you to pass out or faint. Vasovagal syncope is the most common type of reflex syncope, which happens automatically for reasons you cant control.
The speculum opens up to separate the walls of your vagina so that they can see your cervix. You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort when the speculum is put in and opened. Usually a small spatula or tiny brush is used to gently collect cells from the cervix for the Pap test.
Exfoliative cytopathologythe Papanicolaou method, or Pap testis the study of normal and disease-altered, spontaneously exfoliated, or mechanically dislodged cells (surface microbiopsy) for the detection and diagnosis of various infections, abnormal hormonal activities, and precancerous or cancerous lesions.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
The discomfort of a Pap smear mainly occurs from the speculum, which causes a sensation of pressure when it is inserted and then widened to gently push open the sides of the vagina.
Because the procedure touches the cervix, it can trigger vasovagal response - the stimulation of the vagus nerve which can make you lightheaded, sweaty, and dizzy. This can lower your blood pressure making you feel faint. Other side effects of smears are temporary bleeding (spotting) and cramping.
The short answer to this question is, yes, you can be sedated to get a pelvic exam and Pap smear.
