Fainting is a brief episode of unconsciousness caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure. The most likely cause of this sudden drop will either be some change in the blood vessels or the heartbeat itself. Blood vessels continually adjust their width to ensure a constant blood pressure.
Isometric contraction of the muscles of the hands, arms, hands, feet, and legs can immediately stop the vasovagal reaction in its tracks and prevent fainting.
Tensing your arms or crossing your legs can help prevent fainting. Passively raising or propping up your legs in the air can also help. To immediately treat someone who has fainted from vasovagal syncope, help the person lie down and lift their legs up in the air.
Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope.
You may feel dizzy, faint or off balance if your heart isnt pumping enough blood to your brain. Causes include: Drop in blood pressure. A dramatic drop in your systolic blood pressure the higher number in your blood pressure reading may result in brief lightheadedness or a feeling of faintness.
This is because fainting can involve prolonged periods of bradycardia (slower heart rate) lasting 8-15 seconds. During this length of time, the brain isnt supplied with sufficient blood and oxygen, so it can cause the body to shake and jerk in a similar way to someone having a seizure.
The vagal response (vasovagal reflex) is when stimulation of the vagus nerve causes symptoms such as lightheadedness, sweating, and blurred vision. This can happen because of stress, pain, heat, having a bowel movement, or even standing too long.
Vasovagal syncope causes Vasovagal syncope happens when you have a sudden drop in blood pressure, which causes a drop in blood flow to your brain. It often occurs after standing for a while or under emotional distress.
