Fainting isnamp;#39;t fun, and when itamp;#39;s happening to you, or when itamp;#39;s happening to someone else, It is scary, and it is unpleasant, and why, why do we do that? When you faint, itamp;#39;s because your nervous system went haywire, and your brain wasnamp;#39;t getting enough oxygen. A brain requires oxygen like a computer requires electricity and that oxygen is carried to your brain by blood. A lot of blood. About 750 mL of blood flowing through your head every minute. If you suddenly decrease that oxygen-rich blood flow, you get a temporary loss of consciousness known to doctors as syncope, and to the rest of us as fainting. There are lots of different, and sometimes serious medical conditions that can make someone faint, but the kind that weamp;#39;re talking about today, the kind that makes someone drop at the sight of blood, is called Vasovagal Syncope. Itamp;#39;s named after the vagus nerve, which goes from your brain all the way down through your body ending

The immediate cause of syncope is cerebral hypoperfusion, which may occur due to systemic vasodilation, decreased cardiac output, or both. The primary classifications of syncope are cardiac, reflex (neurogenic), and orthostatic.
Neurologic syncope can happen when you have a neurological condition such as a seizure, stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Other less common conditions that lead to neurologic syncope include migraines and normal pressure hydrocephalus.
Prognosis. The overall prognosis of syncope depends on the underlying cause. Patients with syncope with structural heart disease and primary electrical disease are at high risk of overall mortality and sudden cardiac death. Young patients with reflex syncope have an excellent prognosis.
Reflex syncope is the most frequent cause of fainting. Vasovagal syncope the common faint occurs in one third of the population. It is by far the most common form of reflex syncope. Vasovagal syncope is often triggered by a combination of dehydration and upright posture.
Types of Syncope Vasovagal syncope. The most common type of syncope. Postural syncope (postural hypotension). This type of syncope occurs due to an abrupt change in body position (for example, lying down to standing). Cardiac syncope. Neurologic syncope.
The medical term for fainting is syncope, but its more commonly known as passing out. A fainting spell generally lasts from a few seconds to a few minutes. Feeling lightheaded, dizzy, weak, or nauseous sometimes happens before you faint.
When coming round after a faint, the person often feels awful, sickly and may vomit, or even have diarrhoea. Often there is prolonged fatigue after a faint.
Neurocardiogenic syncope is a fainting episode caused by a sudden drop in blood flow to the brainoften a reaction to overwhelming stimuli such as extreme emotional distress or trauma.
