As important as the fabric and pen quality are, the primary cause of autographs fading is exposure to light. The suns natural light contains harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays that have a damaging effect on the molecules in ink. However, artificial lighting can also have a negative effect and speed up the fading process.
The answer is yes! Autograph ID is a mobile app available for both Android and iOS. It uses a combination of advanced machine learning algorithms and human expertise to accurately identify autographs. It can recognize signatures from over 500 celebrities with a 95% accuracy rate.
Unfortunately, there is no way to restore faded ink to its original state. Some chemicals are advertised to darken original inks, but they are often damaging to paper and conservators do not recommend them.
When a signature begins to fade this is not reversible, so we suggest that swift intervention takes place to ensure it does not completely disappear.
The main deterioration factor for items signed on sports memorabilia is the exposure to sunlight. The degradation of materials and the fading autographs on cards and pieces are problems exacerbated by exposure to UV rays from sunlight.
Autographs do not do well in the sun. The UV rays that the sun emits will fade and discolour even the most robust marker pen signature. But that doesnt mean you cant display your autograph on the walls of your home. The solution is to invest in a UV protective display case, which will mitigate any solar radiation.
Even just a few hours of sunlight each day can cause your autograph to fade. Artificial lighting, such as fluorescent lighting, can also cause your autograph to deteriorate, so its best to avoid using it.
