Crooks is the stable hand who cares for the horses in the stable. He is called Crooks because of his crooked back, the result of having been kicked by a horse. He lives in the barn because he is black and is not allowed to live with the white men in the bunkhouse.
The characters such as Lennie, Crooks and Candy all have something that happens to them in the story that brings out their weaknesses. John Steinbeck portrays the effects that weak people reveal through the characters Lennie, Crooks and Candy.
Slim has none. Even when he is first introduced, Slim is described as having a gravity in his manner(33). He is depicted as perfect, and therefore, has no weaknesses. Contrarily, every other major character in the novella does have a weakness of some sort.
Furthermore, the men are paid so little that it is difficult to save enough to make a dream come true. Crooks represents another type of powerlessness. As the sole black man on the ranch, he is isolated from the others, and, in ways that the others are not, subject to their whim.
Steinbeck analyzes the strength and weaknesses in Curleys wife as observed Curleys Wife, she is the only women on the farm leading her to be a target for abuse, since shes the only women on the farm and that shes Curleys wife the other men are jealous as they dont have a wives , shes both above and below the
weakness is most apparent in the character of Lennie, a man who is himself both strong and weak. Physically, Lennie is by far the most powerful man on the farm. However, his demeanor is gentle and often fearfulhe doesnt want to fight the other menand he has a mental disability that leaves him dependent on George.
Crooks occupies the lowest social caste on the ranch because he is the only black worker on the farm. Crooks cannot even live with the other workers in the bunkhouse and is forced to reside in a small room attached to the barn. Crooks is also physically weak and gets his name from his crooked back.
Lennie is physically imposinga huge, hulking man whose frame is compared in size to that of a bear. George is constantly boasting about his companions strength, resilience, and ability to undertake any physical task required of him. At the same time, however, Lennie is weak on the inside.
